Ground Rules for Mindful Miles Walking Groups

Ground Rules for Mindful Miles Walkers

Although walking is one of the safest outdoor activities, it is not completely without risk

Before the walk

■ You participate in a group walk at your own risk
■ It is your responsibility to ensure your own safety and consider the safety of others
■ It is your responsibility to ensure that you are healthy enough and fit enough to complete the walk
■ You must take note of the risk assessment for the walk and declare that you are fit to take part and do not represent a risk to others
■ You should read and abide by any advice and instructions issued by the group convener or walk leader
■ You should wear suitable clothing, and footwear. The walk leader may refuse to allow you to participate in the walk if in their opinion you are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact the Group Convener in advance
■ If you find that you are unable to participate in a walk, please inform the Group Convener as far in advance as possible so that your place may be offered to another member of the group
■ In accordance with u3a guidelines, any member who frequently books places on walks and then regularly cancels, risks losing their place in the group
■ Members who have not attended a walk for at least 6 months will be removed from the group

On the walk

■ The group will meet at the start point detailed in the walk itinerary. It is your responsibility to be there and ready to depart at the stated time
■ The walk may be modified on the day in the event of problems such as blocked paths, flooding etc. You must then follow and support the walk leader’s decisions
■ During the walk you should keep the group leader/main party in sight at all times. There will be a designated back marker (a volunteer from the group) who will ensure the group stays together
■ If you do become separated from the group for any reason, contact the group convener by mobile phone. Contact details will be issued to all those with a confirmed place on the walk
■ If a problem arises and you must stop or leave the walk, you must inform the walk leader. If any member becomes ill or injured then the walk leader will follow the relevant procedures
■ If you decide to leave a walk at an opt-out point, you are responsible for making your own way to your destination
■ Mindful Miles walking groups are not required to have trained first aiders. However, the walk leader will always carry a basic first aid kit even if they have not had specific first aid training

Cancelled walks

■ In the event of bad weather or major transport disruption, the walk leaders may cancel the walk
■ Whenever possible the group webpage on the website will be updated with this information
■ Information about cancellations will also be posted on the Group’s WhatsApp messaging service, which you are encouraged to join
■ The Group’s Whatsapp should only to be used for messages that relate to walking group activities and not for personal or social reasons
■ As cancellations may be made as late on the day of the walk, members are advised to check WhatsApp before leaving home

Dogs on walks

■ Given the additional responsibility it places on all of a group’s walkers, together with the potential for conflict, members are not permitted to bring dogs on Mindful Miles walks.
■ In order to comply with the 2010 Equality Act, the only exception to this is where a member needs to be accompanied by an assistance dog*
■ If you are a member of the group and would like to walk with your assistance dog, please get in touch with the Group Leader to discuss the nature and suitability of the walk

*Assistance dogs are dogs that have been trained in order to provide assistance to disabled people and those with certain medical conditions such as epilepsy

Walking Etiquette

Walking Etiquette

Every walk is different, so a walk leader completes a risk assessment for each led walk which helps to plan and make notes of the steps to keep walkers safe. However there is an equal responsibility for each walker to follow guidance which enables both individuals and the group to maintain safety, as follows:

  • The details of each available led walk are displayed on our website. Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.
  • Walkers must check the seasonal weather forecast and have suitable clothing and footwear, food and, particularly in hot weather, plenty to drink. Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. If in doubt, contact the organisers or the walk leader in advance.
  • In order to reduce the pressure on car parking please try to car share with other walkers whenever possible.
  • Walkers meet at the location given in the instructions (the start of the walk). It is each walker’s responsibility to be at the start ready to depart at the stated time. If asked all walkers are expected to identify themselves to the leader or the leader’s representative in order register attendance.
  • For your own and others' safety always attend the walk leader's briefing, listen to or read and abide by any advice and guidelines issued by the organisers, and the instructions of the walk leader. This includes adhering to the timings set for lunch stops and coffee breaks and walking in single file when necessary, and on the same side of the road. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents, especially when it is necessary to walk along or cross any road.
  • There may be occasions where it is necessary to use a railway level crossing, for which instructions to proceed or wait will be given.
  • Public Rights of Way by their very location present a wide range of surfaces and obstacles, such as slippery surfaces, mud, uneven ground, loose rocks, pot holes, stiles, foot bridges, fallen trees, sharp inclines, steep drops and invasive vegetation. Many paths cross fields which may contain livestock, where it may be necessary to proceed as a group calmly and quietly, ensuring any gates are closed firmly after passing through.
  • Dogs, other than Assistance Dogs, are not permitted on walks. Any person wishing to bring a dog on a led walk must contact the walk leader at least one day before the scheduled walk to check that the terrain is suitable.
  • The leader should always appoint a back-marker, keep an eye out for stragglers, allow comfort breaks as required, not allow faster walkers to set the pace and ensure that no-one is left behind. It is also incumbent upon every walker to ensure that no-one is left behind and also that they advise the backmarker when making, say, a comfort stop.
  • Walkers should follow the route planned by the leader and not get ahead of the leader nor try to force the pace. When turning at a sharp or blind bend in the path please make sure those following behind know where the group is walking. Please bear in mind that we all have a responsibility, not only for our own safety on walks, but also for each other.
  • Walking is very much a social activity. The use of played music, incessant use of a mobile telephone and the use of foul, abusive or insulting words or behaviour are not to be tolerated.
  • The group will operate a system of verbal, written and final warnings to walkers who are uncooperative and/or repeatedly cause offence.
  • In the event of bad weather, walk leaders, at their discretion, may cancel the walk. When possible, this will be displayed on the group's web site Home page the day before the walk. Walkers are therefore advised to check the group's web site in the event of bad weather or phone the leader before setting out to ensure that the walk has not been cancelled.
  • The Gallery page carries albums of photographs taken by members on walks and events, which will include identifiable faces. Some photographs of particular interest may be used from time-to-time on the Mindful Miles or Muddy Bugs Outdoors website. None is to be used for financial reward.

Walking Grades

Mindful Miles Walking Grades Table

Most new walkers should be able to do a ‘B’ level walk however we wouldn’t advise people to start with a higher level than this unless they are either a regular walker or confident of their physical fitness and stamina.  The pace will generally increase with the grade. Winter conditions will increase the difficulty of the walk.  The hardest walks can be very demanding and to really enjoy them requires a reasonably high level of fitness.

Please note that the Leader reserves the right to exclude members that do not have suitable clothing or physical fitness for the selected walk.  If in doubt contact the Leader in advance.  There is a list of recommended walking kit on the Mindful Miles website.
